The View from South of the Potomac River: Meals on Wheels... at 10 Degrees in Alexandria, VA

Meals on Wheels... at 10 Degrees in Alexandria, VA

Chilly Delivery Day

Today was my first rotation for Alexandria Meals on Wheels this year... and I picked a heck of a day for it.  With the arctic blast coming in over night it was 8 degrees when I woke up this morning (Northern VA just across the Potomac from Washington, DC isn't used to single digits) but it inched up a few degrees by the time I arrived for my meals.  The cold did however give me a reason to finally wear a Christmas gift from 2012...  a Carhartt pullover from my mother-in-law.

(Not bad for my first selfie!)

Everyone on my route today was home today and in great spirits, despite the weather.  They all had working heat and very kind souls, as they were so thankful for me coming out in the weather to bring them the food.  Which warms me up in a different way than just heat... there is true gratitude and concern for others out there.  I get my regular dose several times a month.

Meals on Wheels in Alexandria City is coordinated by Senior Services of Alexandria and provides meals free of charge to qualifying residents or they can be purchased.  If you know of someone in Alexandria that may benefit from the program, they can go to http://www.seniorservicesalex.org/meals.html or call 703-836-4414, ext 12.

One downside of delivering the meals is that the inside of my SUV smells soooo good by the end of run that I am starving!  Today's hot meal was beef with gravy, so you know what I wanted by the time I got home... Good thing I didn't join Alan's weight competition.

Great post, AJ. You should be proud of yourself for working with Meals on Wheels.

Bill - It is a good cause and very rewarding, the regulars on the route are the best.

Jill - Thanks, but it's just about an hour and 15 minutes of effort, not much at all.

AJ, You are a good soul to deliver these meals in this severe cold. The recipients depend on that hot meal and it may be the only good meal they have that day.

You are a honorable, giving person for being involved in Meals on Wheels, anytime.  I now there are many who appreciate the important work you are doing.

You are a wonderful individual to give your time on such a frigid day.   These are the volunteer duties that are memorable.

Al,

What a wonderful way to give back, and glad your mother-in-law had given the perfect sweater to be warm in. A

Debbie - Thanks for the compliment... they do look forward to the meals

Jeff - I'll use your comment in the future whenever someone wants a reference

Joan - It is enjoyable... and so easy and quick to do

Alexandra - I wanted something within our city and this fit the bill.  I've been waiting for it to get cold enough to wear it... and now she'll stop asking.

What a wonderful way to pay it forward by serving in your community. It warmed my heart just reading about it! It is always a blessing to be a part of God's blessings. :)

Joni - It just feels good, so I am carving out time in 2014 for this program and volunteering at my son's elementary school... we have the ability to create our own balance.
