First Day of School for Alexandria, VA Public Schools
This morning was a beautiful, as the class of 2026 made its way to the bus stop for the very first time. The list of supplies had been purchased, the clothing had been laid out the night before, and a last minute debate over what to pack for lunch as preceded the 1 minute walk to the bus stop at the corner. There was already a small crowd waiting as we arrived, so there was extra time for the kids to tell each other what teacher they had and while the parents of the older kids dispensed some valuable wisdom to us.
As with most first days, it didn’t go perfectly; the bus was a little late, somebody left something really important at home and had to run back to get it, while another got a little spill on that carefully picked outfit. The moms seem much more upset than the kids, which meant that things were going normally. Then the bus rounded the corner and pulled to a stop, the bus driver introduced herself, and the kids hopped on… each taking a moment to look back near the top of the steps.
So if you see someone with puffy eyes or a little misplaced mascara today, it might not be allergies, but due to a little one starting the next stage in life.
